Description

This route through the Belgian Kempen, so you get the best of everything on this tour: Lummen has characteristics of the Hageland, Haspengouw and mainly the Kempen. You cycle west of Lummen around the Willekensberg with a top of 60 meters above sea level. The hill was planted with coniferous wood for mining after the Second World War and is now being developed into a nature reserve with deciduous forest. On top of the Willekensberg is the chapel The hermitage of the beech tree. You cycle the last part of your route along the Albert Canal. This canal between Liège and Antwerp was dug from 1930 onwards. You cycle past the coal harbour, a side dock of the Albert Canal that was constructed for the transport of coal. Before the arrival of the coal ports, coal was transported to the Walloon steel industry by train. There is no longer a mining industry, but the coal ports are still used for loading imported coal.
