Description
This route through the Belgian Kempen takes you over wooded slopes and through friendly villages. Along the way you will pass Meylandt Castle, originally a large country house. It was first mentioned in documents in 1385. During the last renovation, in 1907, the castle was given its current neoclassical form. Nowadays it houses an art academy. Around the castle is a park with fish ponds that is open to the public and where you can stroll through wonderfully.
The Demer Valley
Around Zonhoven you cycle through the pond area that belongs to the Demer valley. In the sandy soil on the slopes meander the Laambeek, the Roosterbeek and the Slangbeek. They all flow into the Demer. In the meadows and hayfields, in the forests and at the ponds a multitude of plants, birds, insects and mammals grow, bloom and scratch around.
The Abbey of Herkenrode
You continue cycling past the Herkenrode Abbey. This abbey was founded around 1182 as a monastery for Cistercian nuns. Nothing remains of the twelfth-century monastery. The buildings that you can still admire at the abbey date from the 16th to the 18th century. Here you will find, among other things, a monumental gatehouse, a watermill, the infirmary and farm buildings.
