Description
This route through the Belgian Kempen takes you over wooded slopes and through friendly villages. Along the way you will pass Meylandt Castle, originally a large country house. It was first mentioned in documents in 1385. During the last renovation, in 1907, the castle took its current neoclassical form. Nowadays it houses an art academy. Around the castle there is a park with fishing ponds that are publicly accessible and where you can stroll through.
The Demer Valley
Around Zonhoven you cycle through the pond area that belongs to the Demer Valley. The Laambeek, the Roosterbeek and the Slangbeek meander in the sandy bottom on the slopes. All three flow into the Demer. A multitude of plants, birds, insects and mammals grow, bloom and forage in the meadows and meadows, in the forests and near the ponds.
Herkenrode Abbey
You continue cycling past the Herkenrode Abbey. This abbey was founded around 1182 as a monastery for Cistercian women. Nothing has been preserved from the twelfth-century monastery. The buildings that you can still admire at the abbey date from the 16th to 18th centuries. Here you will find, among other things, a monumental gatehouse, a water mill, the infirmary and farm buildings.
