Hotel Mercure Zwolle is located on the outskirts of Zwolle, 2.5 km from the city centre. It features free parking, a 24-hour reception and a terrace with panoramic views over the surrounding fields - an ideal starting point for a nice cycling weekend. Breakfast is served in the dining room and on the terrace when the weather is nice. Bartjens Proeflokaal serves hot and cold drinks and wines from the Grand Vins Mercure menu. In restaurant De Hanze you can enjoy a lunch buffet or a light meal, and there is a menu with international dishes in the evening. This way you no longer have to look for a nice restaurant in the evening! Zwolle is a nice city to get to know a little better. In the Middle Ages, the Hanseatic city of Zwolle arose along the Aa, on a higher sand ridge in an area that was otherwise very swampy. The height differences are still noticeable in the Overijssel capital. Past and present go hand in hand in Zwolle. The cultural offer is varied and ancient monuments and modern buildings merge seamlessly. With this route you will discover how water-rich Zwolle actually is. First you follow the Zwarte Water out of the city, this river flows from Zwolle to the Zwarte Meer near the Noordoostpolder. The name Zwarte Water probably has nothing to do with the color black, but with'sweat\\\'; this means'border\\\'. In old documents the river is also called Ons Water. The Black Water was important for the development of the Hanseatic city of Zwolle; the river connected the Zwolle with the sea and the other Hanseatic cities. Then you turn to discover the Overijsselse Vecht. You will pass the Agnietenberg and the Haersterveer: the Agnietenberg consists of a forest area, recreational lake De Agnietenplas and adjacent camping site De Agnietenberg. There is also a TOP, Tourist Transfer Point with free parking space and information. Just behind it you cross the Vecht with the ferry. A little further on you will see Huize Den Doorn, one between the hamlets of Genne and Haerst, on the Overijsselse Vecht with Zijlkolk. Den Doorn is a former manor house. The house dates from the 17th century, but it still contains elements from an earlier late Gothic period. Part of the house was demolished at the end of the 19th century. It was during this period that the building took on its present form. The building has only one storey, which has a large hipped roof. The building houses that originally belonged to the havezate have disappeared. Instead, in the 19th century, a transverse farmhouse was built to the left of the main building. In the period 1955 to 1967 the house was restored. The manor house was owned for decades by members of the Van Raesfelt family and later by the Van Haersolte family, who, because of that possession, were written off as knights of Overijssel; a branch of the last family bore the name Van Haersolte tot/van den Doorn. It continues, along Hasselt to Genemuiden, also located on the Black Water. It is the third largest city in Northwest Overijssel, also known as the Kop van Overijssel. Traditionally, Genemuiden has mainly depended on rush cultivation. Processing rushes was an important source of income for the city. Chair seats were mainly made of it. After the Second World War, the coconut industry took on an important role: in 1950, one in three Genemuiders worked on the production of coconut mats. When this industry declined in 1965, it was replaced by the manufacture of soft floor coverings. Zwartsluis, which you see on the other side of the water, played a completely different role. The port of Swarte Sluys was first mentioned in 1398. Zwartsluis was a transit port for peat, which was cut in Drenthe and transported to Holland. The harbor still exists, but nowadays it is used a lot for recreational purposes. In addition, residents of the region find work in shipbuilding. It is wonderful to look out over the water and enjoy the water sports that are practiced in peace. Together with Genemuiden and Hasselt, Zwartsluis has formed the municipality of Zwartewaterland since 2001. You drive back to Zwolle through the polders. Tomorrow you will discover a completely different corner of this versatile region with route number 149084.
