Tour of Mariaveen from Helenaveen

Your walk starts with a cup of coffee at Hotel Eetcafé In D\\\'ouwe Peel in Helenaveen. This is the only two peat colony in the southern Netherlands outside Griendtsveen. The town enjoys a protected village view, nice to taste the atmosphere! There was once a raised moor area of 30,000 hectares on the border of North Brabant and Limburg. Peat was mined here until the twentieth century. Nowadays, efforts are being made to make the area around Helenaveen wetter again, so that the raised moor can recover. Your route today leads you through the Mariaveen. Due to the peat extraction, the landscape here is dotted with peel canals, peat pits and ponds. Pipe straw and heather plants grow on the open plains. Here you will experience the peace and space that makes this region so popular.
