Your route starts at Pannenkoe Leusden. The Dutch Waterline's defensive line is worth a bike ride! Follow part of the Grebbe Line through the Gelderse Vallei along the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. It's a national monument, a "unique example of defensive works." The Grebbe Line was last used in 1939 against the invading Germans. In 1951, the line officially lost its defensive function. However, what the Grebbe Line never lost was its cultural-historical and natural value. You'll cross the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park to cycle to the Leusderheide, in the heart of the park. The Leusderheide ecoduct and the Treekerwissel ecoduct were built here to allow animals to move between the Leusderheide and the surrounding forests. Badgers, lizards, and foxes, among others, frequently use these crossings.
