Cycling along the Grebbelinie

The Dutch Waterline's foreland defences are worth a bike ride! Follow part of the Grebbelinie through the Gelderse Vallei along the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. The Grebbelinie was given the status of national monument in 2011 because it is a "unique example of defence works". The Grebbelinie was last used in 1939, against the Germans who would later occupy our country. In 1951, the line officially lost its defensive function. What the Grebbelinie never lost, however, was its cultural-historical and natural value. You cross the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park to cycle to the Leusderheide, in the heart of the park. The Leusderheide has two ecoducts: the Leusderheide ecoduct, which runs over the A28 in the northwest, and the Treekerwissel ecoduct, which runs over the N227 in the southeast. These ecoducts were built to allow animals to move between the Leusderheide and the surrounding forests. Among others badgers, lizards and foxes frequently use the crossings.
