Wijk bij Duurstede is a beautiful old town at the intersection of the Lower Rhine and the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal. In the surrounding polders you can enjoy a vast river landscape.
Amerongen Castle
At De Veldpoort Eten en Drinken you can have a nice lunch on the cozy terrace before you get on your bike. You first drive through the Kromme Rijnstreek. From the saddle you have a beautiful view over the elongated plots of grassland and the many ditches. From a distance you can see the wooded Utrechtse Heuvelrug approaching. You drive a bit through Leersum, the next stop is the beautiful Amerongen Castle.
Duurstede Castle
More castles were built along the Lek in the past. Only the moat of Bergestein Castle is still partly visible in the landscape. Natewisch Castle dates from the thirteenth century. At the end of the nineteenth century, a large part of the castle was demolished. Only the tower still stands, a proud reminder of times gone by. Don't worry, finally you will pass Duurstede Castle and drive through the picturesque heart of Wijk bij Duurstede.
