Description
The lovely esdorp Beilen is a perfect base in the Heart of Drenthe. This beautiful village is located near the Terhorsterzand, a varied drifting sand area.
Picturesque Beilen
This route departs from Het Zwaantje Eetcafé Bar in the picturesque Beilen, an esdorp in the middle of Drenthe that is for that reason also called the Heart of Drenthe. To the north lies the Terhorsterzand, a drifting sand area that no longer really drifts because more than 1900 pines hold the sand. Yet the 181 hectare site is also very open. Most of it consists of heathland, which contains beautiful fens.
Juniper thickets
The presence of juniper thickets is special, but the area has a varied flora and fauna. Among other things, the orchid, common eagle and swamp club moss grow there, while the adder, moor frog, oriole and little grebe hide on the sandy bottom and on the banks of the fens. In addition, sheep and cattle graze on the heath. Back in Beilen you can enjoy a drink on a terrace at Het Zwaantje and look around the lovely Beilen.
