Description
Explore the Mariapeel, a small part of the De Groote Peel raised bog area. Here you cycle past peeling canals, peat wells and water ponds that were created by peat extraction. These peat areas alternate with overgrown heathlands on the route.
Raised moor area the Mariapeel
Centuries ago, the De Groote Peel raised bog area was more than 30,000 hectares in size. A large part of this area disappeared due to peat extraction and the cultivation of agricultural land. Only 4,000 hectares of peat was preserved. In this area you can encounter all kinds of rare butterflies and dragonflies that only live in peat areas. On this route you also cycle through Helenaveen, America and Griendtsveen, a small hamlet with only a few inhabitants. The village was founded around 1885 during the reclamation of the peat area in the area. When the entire Peel was excavated, the village was given a permanent residential function. Due to its special history, Griendtsveen is probably the only village in Peel that does not have an agricultural background.
