Description
The Denderstreek is a region in the province of East Flanders. The region takes its name from the 65 kilometer long river Dender that flows into the Scheldt. The Dender meanders through the sometimes slightly sloping green landscape. It is surrounded by low-lying lakes, with alternating natural swamp areas and poplar plantations. In addition to the beautiful nature, the route takes you through a number of picturesque East Flemish villages.
The Flemish comedian Urbanus has lived in Tollembeek for years. The village is also the setting of the comic series'Urbanus\\\', although Tollembeek looks completely different in the comic series than in the real world. However, the municipality cannot be denied a certain sense of humor: it has Tollebeek in Flevoland as a partner city. You drive into the town of Geraardsbergen along the banks of the Dender. Cycling enthusiasts are of course familiar with the steep and bumpy slope De Muur van Geraardsbergen. The Wall is a cobblestone road on the Oudenberg, the hill against which the city center of Geraardsbergen is located.
Although the route runs along the Dender, you can of course try to climb this infamous executioner. The steep slope has a length of 1075 meters, the highest gradient is 20%. At the top of the 110-metre peak you have a beautiful view of the surroundings. There is also a chapel. Although cyclists can safely say thank you for making the climb, according to local tradition, the Oudenberg was already a sanctuary in pre-Christian times.'Oudenberg\\\' is said to be a corruption of'Odinberg\\\', which refers to the Germanic supreme god Odien. The current chapel would stand on the site of the shrine.
