The Bommelerwaard has a rich and exciting history, which goes back thousands of years and has left many traces. Let this route take you through this versatile region and learn all about the fascinating history of the Bommelerwaard. The fight against water is a recurring element in the cycle route. For example, you pass the Afgedamde Maas to Well and on the Maasdijk you will find the De Baanbreker pumping station, which ensures drainage in Oost-Bommelerwaard. The route also takes you past some beautiful castles, such as Loevestein Castle and Ammersoyen Castle. Visit Loevestein Castle and learn all about this beautiful 17th century fortress. Ammersoyen Castle, with its impressive corner towers, robust castle wall and wide moat, is one of the best preserved medieval moated castles in our country. You cycle the last part of the route towards Gorinchem, where the route passes Fort Vuren and the Hugo de Grootpoortje. From Gorinchem you take the ferry or water taxi back to Slot Loevestein.
