Let yourself be taken through the hilly landscape of the Flemish Ardennes on this cycling tour southeast of Oudenaarde. You drive through small towns with many chapels that adorn the rolling landscape.
Feast your eyes on Geraardsbergen
The Flemish Ardennes consist of the hilly area between Oudenaarde, Zottegem and Geraardsbergen. You will find a wide variety of landscapes with ponds, spring forests, swamp forests, wooded hills and open fields. At the beginning of the route you will pass the St. Vincentius Chapel from the 12th century. A little further along the route you cycle through Geraardsbergen. This place is infamous in the cycling world for the steep and bumpy slope of the Muur van Geraardsbergen. On the Grote Markt you can admire the neo-Gothic St. Bartholomew's Church and the neo-Gothic town hall. You will also find a Manneken Pis here who is no less than 160 years older than the famous little guy in Brussels.
Historical buildings in Sint-Martens-Lierde
From Geraardsbergen you cycle further through Sint-Martens-Lierde and Brakel to the starting point of the route in Maarkedal. In Sint-Martens-Lierde you will find remains of the former Carthusian priory Sint-Martens-Bosse. This priory was built in 1329, but only the 18th century buildings have been preserved such as the rectory, the monastery church and the entrance gate. The church is still in use.
