Industrial Heritage Route Exciting History

The 19th century is known in the Netherlands as the time of the Industrial Revolution. The industry also developed rapidly in the Achterhoek. Small-scale workshops grew into large factories, manual production was increasingly replaced by machine production and roads were paved and railways were built to easily transport raw materials and products.
 
The industrial revolution in pictures
In a number of places in the Achterhoek you can still see objects that played a major role in the industrial revolution. This route takes you past four of these locations: the Mallumsche Molen in Eibergen, the Grolsch brewery in Groenlo, the Steengraven and the Tricot Factory in Winterswijk. There is a starting point for the route in both Eibergen and Winterswijk-Meddo that leads you further through the beautiful scenic landscape of the Achterhoek. The route is signposted via the cycle junction system.

On the road with your bike
This route is more than 100 kilometers long. A sturdy route that you can cycle in several days, but you can also shorten the route. To do this, you cycle from junction 2 to junction 3 instead of to junction 5. You then cycle the last part of this route back to the starting point. You can then explore the southern part of the route another time.

In Groenlo you can take a look at the brewery where Grolsch used to be brewed. Here you will learn more about the brewing process and the glorious history of the beer brand. Take a tour and discover the cellar, the well and other characteristic places from the history of Grolsch.
