Description
The Grensmaas valley is a beautiful part of Limburg that is perfect for a bike ride. Enjoy the rural character of this region and the many nice towns and villages along the Maas in the Netherlands and just across the border in Belgium.
Picturesque villages
Roasting is the starting point of this route. This small picturesque town is only separated from Belgium by the Meuse. On the left bank of the Maas, opposite Roosteren, you will find the Belgian city of Maaseik. Take a look at the historic market of Maaseik and then continue your tour along the meandering Maas. North of Maaseik, the Maas is beautiful and capricious. In Neeritter you cycle past the Armenmolen, which was already mentioned in 1280 in old writings. The current building dates from 1686. The water mill was a gift from a lord of the castle to the poor and that is where the name Armenmolen comes from. You then cycle on to Neerouten, Dilsen and Grevenbicht. The Grevenbichtermolen is located in the latter town.
Castle Ter Motten
In Dilsen you will find the castle Ter Motten. This castle was built in 1725 on the site of a much older castle. The building is imposing and largely built in the baroque style. In 1932 an extra wing was added to the castle. The castle is built of bricks painted yellow. Today the castle is used as the town hall of Dilsen-Stokkem.
