Tour of Dwingelderveld National Park

Imagine yourself far from civilization among the rolling heathlands, more than sixty ponds and fens, drifting sandy soils and forests in the largest wet heathland area in Western Europe: Dwingelderveld National Park.

Dwingelderveld National Park
From Fluitenberg you leave in a northerly direction to Pesse. On to Dwingelderveld National Park, a unique place with special flora and fauna. There are almost 300 different bird species and almost all Dutch reptiles are represented on the wet heathland. From the national park you cycle to the country estate of Dwingeloo.

Oldengaerde Castle
A little further on you cycle past Oldengaerde Castle. This is one of the five estates that once stood in or around Dwingeloo. The house was built in the first half of the 15th century by Reynolt van Echten. Oldengaerde remained in the family for about 240 years. Because of their origins and their property they were admitted to the Knighthood of Drenthe. In 1717, the manor was extensively renovated and a facade in Vingboons style was installed. In 2013, the estate was transferred to the Drentse Landschap Foundation.

Characteristic route
From Oldengaerde Castle you cycle to the outskirts of the Dwingelderveld National Park. You cycle through the village of Uffelte, where there are many characteristic farms. The landscape you cycle through is characterized by ash trees, but also by heathland, forest, peat and drifting sand areas. A feast for the eyes and wonderful nature to cycle through. Via Ruinen you arrive back at the start and end point of the route: Fluitenberg.
