South Limburg is rich in castles and fortified farms. This route takes you along castles in the area around Eijsden. Kasteel Oost was originally a thirteenth-century residential tower, surrounded by a moat. The residential tower was rebuilt with marlstone in 1548 and is still part of the current mansion. In Gronsveld, stop off at De Kwizzenjèr! Sint Antoniusbank is a beautiful old hamlet of about 40 houses. You will see square farms, monumental farms and a former monastery. Huis Blankenberg was built on original Roman foundations. The Romans had built a lighthouse here as a beacon for soldiers and traders on their way from Maastricht to Trier. On the edge of Maastricht you will pass the Torenmolen van Gronsveld, one of the five remaining tower mills in the Netherlands.
