South Limburg is rich in castles and fortified farms. This route takes you past castles in the Eijsden area. East Castle was originally a thirteenth-century residential tower, surrounded by a moat. The residential tower was rebuilt with marlstone in 1548 and is still part of the current mansion. Get off at De Kwizzenjèr in Gronsveld! Sint Antoniusbank is a beautiful old hamlet of about 40 houses. You will see square farms, monumental farms and a former monastery. House Blankenberg was built on original Roman foundations. The Romans had built a lighthouse here as a beacon for soldiers and traders on their way from Maastricht to Trier. On the outskirts of Maastricht you will pass the Gronsveld Tower Mill, one of the five remaining tower mills in the Netherlands.
