In Friesland you can still admire centuries-old churches on the mounds. In the countryside you can enjoy the peace and views.
Frisian churches
It is wonderful to travel for miles in this quiet and water-rich area. In Beers the thirteenth-century Mariakerk still stands on the mound. Nearby, a steel reconstruction of the Uniastate, demolished in 1756, can be seen in the meadow. Only the centuries-old gatehouse of these former stins still exists. You can also see beautiful old churches in Boksum and Blessum.
Rentier homes
You drive a few kilometers along the Bolswardertrekvaart. This canal dates back to 1638. What a history! In Mantgum you drive through the protected villagescape. You can enjoy a characteristic atmosphere here, thanks in part to the old Maria Church. Many rentiers settled here in the nineteenth century. They built beautiful monumental buildings and associated parks. You can also admire a medieval church in Roordahuizum: the Vincentius Church.
