Breskens, Nieuwvliet-Bad and Oostburg

In IJzendijke, the Veste still bears witness to the fortress that the town once was. During the Eighty Years' War, a redoubt with four strongholds was built, which was then expanded into an almost impregnable fortress for the State troops against the Spaniards. The last fortifications were demolished in 1843, but a small part was restored in the twentieth century. Breskens is the maritime seaside resort par excellence, with its own fishing port and a modern marina. The huge seagoing ships on the Western Scheldt provide a beautiful view all day long and the dunes and the beach give you that real holiday feeling. The Lighthouse of Breskens (New Lock) was built in 1866-1867. The octagonal tower, painted black and white, is 28.4 meters high. With a series of other lights it marks the end of the Scheldt and thus guides shipping traffic between the North Sea and Antwerp. It is the oldest existing cast-iron lighthouse in the Netherlands. The belt mill Molen Nieuwvliet is visible from afar from some directions. The mill was built in 1850 and served as a corn mill until 1954. It was then emptied and replaced by an electric mill. In 1980, the restored mill was put into operation again. It is now drained by volunteer millers. The Molen Luteyn (hull/remainder) is a former corn mill. The high hull determines the village image. The old brick tower mill once served as a flour mill and was dismantled in 1923. The mill hull is on the list of national monuments.
