Breskens, Nieuwvliet-Bad and Oostburg

In IJzendijke, the Veste (Fortress) still bears witness to the town's former fortress. During the Eighty Years' War, a redoubt with four bastions was built, which was later expanded into a virtually impregnable fortress for the Dutch troops against the Spanish. The last fortifications were demolished in 1843, but a small section was restored in the twentieth century. Breskens is the maritime seaside resort par excellence, with its own fishing port and a modern marina. The enormous seagoing vessels on the Western Scheldt provide magnificent views all day long, and the dunes and beach give you that true holiday feeling. The Breskens Lighthouse (Nieuwe Sluis) was built in 1866-1867. The octagonal, black-and-white painted tower is 28.4 meters tall. Along with a series of other lights, it marks the end of the Scheldt, guiding shipping traffic between the North Sea and Antwerp. It is the oldest surviving cast-iron lighthouse in the Netherlands. The Nieuwvliet belt mill is visible from afar in some directions. Built in 1850, it served as a corn mill until 1954. It was then emptied and replaced by an electric mill. The restored mill was put back into service in 1980 and is now operated by volunteer millers. The Luteyn mill (body/remains) is a former corn mill. Its tall body defines the village landscape. The old brick smock mill once served as a corn mill and was dismantled in 1923. The mill body is a designated national monument.
