Breskens, Nieuwvliet-Bad and Oostburg

In IJzendijke, the Veste still bears witness to the fortress that the town once was. During the Eighty Years' War, a redoubt with four bastions was built, which was then expanded into a virtually impregnable fortress of the Dutch troops against the Spanish. In 1843, the last fortifications were demolished, but in the twentieth century a small part was restored. Breskens is the maritime seaside resort par excellence, with its own fishing port and a modern marina. The enormous seagoing vessels on the Western Scheldt provide a beautiful view all day long and the dunes and the beach give you that real holiday feeling. The Breskens Lighthouse (Nieuwe Sluis) was built in 1866-1867. The octagonal, black and white painted tower is 28.4 metres high. With a series of other lights, it marks the end of the Scheldt and thus guides shipping traffic between the North Sea and Antwerp. It is the oldest cast iron lighthouse in the Netherlands that still exists. The belt mill Molen Nieuwvliet is visible from afar from some directions. The mill was built in 1850 and served as a corn mill until 1954. It was then emptied and replaced by an electric mill. In 1980, the restored mill was put back into use. It is now pumped by volunteer millers. The Molen Luteyn (body/remains) is a former corn mill. The high body determines the village image. The old brick tower mill once served as a corn mill and was dismantled in 1923. The body of the mill is on the list of national monuments.
