Castles around Bruges

Bruges is the capital and largest city of West Flanders, yet the charming town retains a small-scale feel. Much of its atmosphere is exuded by the 430-hectare historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a medieval city. Charming houses, historic streets, and charming squares await your discovery. Of the 117,000 inhabitants, only 20,000 live in the center. Canals have connected the city to the sea for centuries and have brought it great prosperity. On the edge of the Bruges urban area lies an old hamlet that has been incorporated into the city. Male Castle is by far the most interesting sight in this district and is also known as St. Trudo's Abbey. The abbey was founded around 1050, when a hermit began building a modest place of worship. He gained followers who quickly formed a community. A church and a monastery were built, which burned down in 1261. Both were rebuilt closer to the road to Kortrijk. For years, the religious building was used for religious worship until it became privately owned in 2011. Another beautiful place worth visiting is the Ryckevelde Estate. Over 120 hectares of woodland and heathland stretch here. The forests are partly protected, and the area is partly a military domain. The estate includes a neo-Gothic castle, a manor house and farmhouse, and an artfully landscaped native garden. The Huis van Caloen (House of Caloen) is also an impressive building. The house was inhabited by a noble family, which was granted its first baronial title in 1839. Finally, come to Tillegembos Provincial, also known as the Provincial Estate of Tillegembos. Deciduous and coniferous forests, meadows, and recreational pastures further enhance the character of the walled castle of Tillegemen and the accompanying chapel and castle farm that dominate the grounds. Allotment gardeners will also find plenty to enjoy, as there are several plots where they can pursue their hobby with love and pleasure. The route begins and ends at the Peelaertplein parking lot.
