Description

This fun cycling route in Zuid-Beveland (Zeeland) takes you through a lovely, atmospheric landscape full of winding creeks with rolling banks and beautiful reed beds. In the marshy, rural area you cycle past characteristic farms and through fields and orchards. The area has never been densely populated, which gives Zuid-Beveland an unprecedented tranquility. The various mills deserve special attention on this beautiful route. You will also pass Fort Ellewoutsdijk, a beautiful hexagonal fort from 1839 that is still completely intact. It was built after the Netherlands seceded from Belgium and had to prevent ships from sailing to Antwerp. It also protected the naval base and trading city of Vlissingen. Because of the special ecological value of the area around the fort, Natuurmonumenten purchased it. Take a break along the way at Schaapskooi Zeeland!
