Through the Scheldt river basin

In Bossuit you will find a visitor center in the restored old pump building of Bossuit. The pump building is located on the Kortrijk-Bossuit Canal, which connects the Scheldt river with the Leie river. The canal was dug for three years from 1857 by 1,200 workers, using 40 horses. It had to be a shorter connecting road between the Hainaut industrial areas and the North Sea. The pump building pumped water from the Scheldt to feed the canal, because the canal was higher than the Scheldt and the Leie. In 1970 the canal was widened and another new pump building was built. You can go to the visitor center for tourist information about the area.

You continue cycling along the banks of the Scheldt. The river was mentioned in a Roman text from the 1st century BC. already mentioned, as'Scaldis\\\'. At Ruien you cycle along the Kluisberg, 141 meters high, with the Kluisbos on its flanks. The name Kluisberg is said to come from a hermitage in the Kluisbos, about which there are several stories. The slope has been part of the Tour of Flanders several times. Via Avelgem you arrive back at the Kortrijk-Bossuit Canal and cycle the last part of this watery route along the steadily flowing canal water.
