Description

This tour takes you through the rural area south of Kortrijk, in the region between the Scheldt and Leie rivers. From the starting point Zwevegem you cycle to Rekkem, the birthplace of Paul Deman, the first winner of the Tour of Flanders. Here on the slopes and in the undulations of the landscape you can imagine how his love for cycling originated.

Rekkem is the birthplace of Paul Deman, a Belgian cyclist. He was the winner of the first Tour of Flanders in 1913. There were 37 riders at the start, of which 16 reached the finish. After more than 12 hours of driving, Paul Deman won the first Tour of Flanders with an average speed of 27 km per hour. He subsequently went on to win even more cycling victories.

The last part of your route you cycle along the water. The Bossuit-Kortrijk Canal connects the Scheldt with the Leie. The canal was intended to connect the Hainaut industrial areas more quickly with the North Sea. It was dug by hand by 1,200 workers for three years starting in 1857.
