Kemmel, Loker and Nieuwkerke

The West Flemish Heuvelland is located on the border of the Belgian province of West Flanders and the French Northern department, between the rivers Yser and Leie. This sparsely populated area is characterized by the many hills with wooded siphonic peaks. Every now and then it is a bit of a push, to then enjoy the descent again with the wind in your face. You cycle along the Kemmelberg, which is 156 m high. This is the highest point in the province. Because of the swampy, swampy soil, the forests are criss-crossed with many streams. In the spring bluebells color the flanks of the hills purple. Domein De Warande consists of a 16 ha park with a castle. In the park you can enjoy the many deciduous trees while walking, the pond that is fed by the Kasteelbeek or Willebeek and the St. Laurentius well with healing water against eye pain and burns. The neo-Renaissance castle was built in 1925. The imposing castle is now used as a town hall.

One of the villages on your way is Kemmel, which is in the list of 50 most beautiful villages in Flanders. You also visit the places Loker, Dranouter and Nieuwkerke. A beautiful sight in Nieuwkerke is the Romanesque Church of Our Lady. This imposing, three-aisled church was set on fire several times by Protestant beggars, but was always rebuilt. There are also four British military cemeteries in the village.
