Description

Your cycling tour starts at junction 4. At Bellem you cycle along De Kraenepoel. This 22-hectare pool with surrounding forests is the last of the dozens of ponds that used to dot the vast moors between Aalter and Bruges in the Middle Ages. The pool was created in the 13th century by excavating fieldstones and peat extraction. The pits that were left after that were used to breed fish. The ride leads north of Aalter along the Ghent-Bruges canal. You can enjoy a lot of natural beauty, heath and pine forests around Aalter. The city is located in the Meetjesland region, in the northwest of the province of East Flanders. The area has been designated a Flemish Regional Landscape. In addition to forests and extensive agricultural land, you will also find polders, creeks and canals. A wonderful area to explore by bike.
