Description

Your cycle tour starts at junction 4. You cycle past De Kraenepoel at Bellem. This 22 ha pond with surrounding forests is the last of the dozens of ponds that dotted the vast heathland between Aalter and Bruges in the Middle Ages. The pond was created in the 13th century by digging up field stones and extracting peat. The pits that remained were used to breed fish. The tour takes you north of Aalter along the Ghent-Bruges canal. Around Aalter you can enjoy a lot of natural beauty, heathland and pine forests. The city is located in the Meetjesland region, in the northwest of the province of East Flanders. The area has been designated as a Flemish Regional Landscape. In addition to forests and vast agricultural lands, you will also find polders, creeks and canals. A wonderful area to explore by bike.
