Description

Your cycle tour starts at junction 4. Near Bellem, you'll cycle past De Kraenepoel. This 22-hectare pond with surrounding forests is the last of the dozens of ponds that dotted the vast heathland between Aalter and Bruges in the Middle Ages. The pond was created in the 13th century by excavating fieldstones and extracting peat. The remaining pits were used for fish farming. The route leads north of Aalter along the Ghent-Bruges Canal. Around Aalter, you can enjoy abundant natural beauty, heathland, and pine forests. The city is located in the Meetjesland region, in the northwest of the province of East Flanders. The area has been designated a Flemish Regional Landscape. Besides forests and vast farmland, you'll also find polders, creeks, and canals. A wonderful area to explore by bike.
