Description
The route starts at the VVV Waterland van Friesland in Heeg. Heeg (or Heech as we say in Friesland) is the Eldorado for water sports enthusiasts. Large and small events are regularly organized in the bustling village. Heech excitement on Ascension Day is a household name, but you also don't want to miss the Heechersimmer festival. You can enjoy a snack and drink on the terraces located on the water or in the cozy and cozy center. Or take a walk and see the history of eel fishing in the beautiful facades, shops and monumental buildings on both sides.
We are proud, or proud, that Waterland van Friesland is part of a National Landscape: one of the twenty National Landscapes in our country. In 2006, the area was designated by the government as a National Landscape Southwest Fryslân. Why? Here you will find a unique combination of natural elements and landscape features from cultural history. Walking on an old sea dike, cycling over gentle slopes, (canoeing) through the forests, enjoying panoramic views, Frisian lakes and an extensive IJsselmeer coast. It's all possible here.
Gaastmeer (or Gaastmar as we say in Friesland) is a rustic area and offers good opportunities to escape all the hustle and bustle. Get on board while making sailing, canoeing or sloop trips and discover nature in the surrounding area around Gaastmeer, such as the Groote Gaastmeer, Heegermeer and the Fluessen. The village, which is also the birthplace of the Frisian poet Jan Jelles Hof, consists of two parts: Kleine Gaastmeer and Grote Gaastmeer.
Woudsend (or Wâldsein as we say in Friesland) is a real water sports village due to its location between two Frisian lakes and on the Elfstedentocht route. Over the years, this trading village has really managed to retain the charm of the past. Wander through narrow alleys, past restored buildings and discover surprising vistas. Don't forget to visit the churches, Korenmolen't Lam and Houtzagmolen de Jager. In the summer you can of course visit the weekly Farmers Market on Thursdays, a market with fresh regional products, supplemented with activities for young and old.
