Description

This route takes you through the vast fields of the IJssel Valley and along the winding banks of the IJssel. Along the way you will pass a number of windmills: historical gems in the Dutch landscape.

IJssel
From the Bussloo recreation area you can enjoy the Appense Bos, a beautiful and quiet nature reserve. In Klarenbeek you will pass De Hoop, an octagonal flour mill from 1905 that is covered with reeds. Just after Empe you drive along a leafy road. On your left you will see a small lake: it is a remnant of the Oude IJssel.

Tower City
You cross the IJssel for a ride through the center of Zutphen. In the beautiful historic center of this Hanseatic city you will find many medieval houses. With its many spires, Zutphen is also known as Tower City. In the IJsselvallei you drive on car-free roads along meadows and along the river. You pass the Wilpermolen, a flour mill from 1736.
