Tour of Leek and Leekstermeer

This route takes you for a tour around Leek in Groningen. You pass old churches and through Drenthe's natural beauty.

Nienoord
The route starts in the village of Tolbert. As befits a Groningen village, there is also a beautiful medieval church here! Further on you will pass Nienoord. This country estate originated in the sixteenth century as a reclamation project in a vast peat area. Now it is a stylish noble estate with a beautiful borg from 1524. There is an exhibition about the glorious history of the borg and old-fashioned carriages. A special piece of Dutch history.

Onlanden
In Midwolde there is a beautiful Romanesque church, it resembles the one in Tolbert. The church in Lettelbert is a bit small, but no less beautiful. The Leekstermeer is not located in Groningen, but in Drenthe. To the right of it you drive through the rugged low moor areas of the Onlanden, a unique piece of nature between the higher Drenthe sandy soils and Groningen clay soils.
