Description
South Limburg has the highest castle density in the Netherlands, so there is plenty to see here. This challenging route takes you past the most beautiful castles in Dutch and Belgian Limburg and through the rolling landscape.
Centuries-old buildings
The starting point of this route is in the beautiful town of Valkenburg aan de Geul. Get on your bike here and set course for Schin op Geul and on to Gulpen. Along the way you will pass through various picturesque towns and you can also take a look at Oost Castle and Schaloen Castle, among others.

The starting point of this route is in the beautiful town of Valkenburg aan de Geul. Get on your bike here and set course for Schin op Geul and on to Gulpen. Along the way you will pass through various picturesque towns and you can also take a look at Oost Castle and Schaloen Castle, among others.
You then cycle along the Geul to the bridge at the Drie Beeldjes. According to legend, the group of statues was placed here on behalf of the lord of Schaloen. He wanted to cross the Geul with his horse, but the horses were stopped by evil spirits. He was advised to erect statues in honor of Jesus, Mary and John at the edge of the forest on the other side of the Geul. After they were placed, he was able to cross the Geul unhindered.
Beautiful half-timbered houses
From Gulpen you cycle around the Gulperberg to the Belgian border. Then you cycle back to Valkenburg via Margraten. Along the way you can enjoy numerous half-timbered houses that give the region a medieval appearance.
Tough climbs
Along the way you sometimes have to climb a bit on the Limburg hills. That makes this route nice and challenging. The beautiful views from the higher elevations are definitely worth all that effort. For example, along the way you look out over the dilapidated monastery ruins of Hoogcruts. Furthermore, you cycle over the Margraten plateau, at a height of 140 meters.
