SILHOUETTES IN THE LANDSCAPE
The windmills on Voorne-Putten remind us of earlier times when the grain was delivered by the farmers by horse and cart and was ground into flour by the miller using huge millstones. Polder windmills can no longer be found on this part of the island, most of them have been replaced by steam pumping stations before 1930. Each village still has its own windmill.
AND ACROSS
Classic Dutch windmills are a familiar silhouette in the landscape. An almost equally familiar image are the modern windmills on the other side of the Haringvliet from the cycle path on the sea dike. These mills are not about grain, but about wind. The windmills provide energy for thousands of households and businesses. Cycling past the windmills on Voorne-Putten is cycling past, present and future.
EAGLE WITH WINGS
The white plastered, round stone tower mill De Arend dates from 1844. The mill was built to replace a burned-down wooden mill. After that, De Arend was resold a number of times. It remained in operation until 1954, after which it slowly but surely fell into disrepair. In 1969, the municipality bought the mill to make it operational again after two restorations in 1972 and 1977. It has been operated by volunteers ever since.
GRIND PANCAKE FLOUR
Corn mill'Nooitgedacht\\\', next to the old pumping station'De Leeuw van Putten\\\', is a round brick mill. Due to the growth of the village of Spijkenisse into a bustling city, the mill now stands brotherly next to modern buildings. In 2009, the mill was raised seven meters. According to the restaurant's menu in the
mill, the pancakes are baked with flour that has been ground by this mill.
WIND AND EYE CATCHER
The mill of Geervliet is a real eye-catcher. The original mill was built on a watchtower of the medieval city wall and loopholes can still be seen in the hull of the mill. After Geervliet was granted city rights in 1381, work started on the construction of the very first mill on that site. The mill was decommissioned in 1947 and after restorations in the fifties and seventies it has been furnished as a restaurant.
MILL DE HOPE, ABBENTROUSERS
De Hoop is a corn mill built in 1843. The round stone mill is bottle-shaped: the hull has a pronounced constriction. The mill was used as such until 1947, after which the mill was ground electrically. In 1974, the then municipality of Abbenbroek bought the mill. In 1979 the mill was restored and made ready for grinding. De Hoop, like the accompanying granary and miller's house, is a national monument.
STANDARD, PROPOSAL AND CORNS
In 1697 there was a wooden standerd mill on the place where the Dry Dock is now. This mill had to make way for the Dry Dock at the end of the 18th century. The stone tower mill'De Hoop\\\' was built in 1801. Downstairs, the flour wagons could drive under the hatches to be loaded or unloaded. This passage was restored to its former glory during the restoration of 1962-1961. view all cycling routes at www.opvoorneputten.nl
