BRIDGES IN TIME
A greater contrast between past and present, between old and new, can hardly be found anywhere at such a short distance from each other as here on Voorne-Putten.
CITYSCAPE WITH SHOOTHOLES
If you cycle through Geervliet, it seems as if you are going back in time, or that you have ended up in the Middle Ages. You will find monumental buildings, the church and the mill that was built on a former powder tower and where you can still see the loopholes in the wall. The village center is a fully protected cityscape and because life seems to stand still here, it is regularly the backdrop for historical films.
FROM TRACTOR TO CONTAINER SHIP
If you cycle out of the village, you are immediately back in the 21st century with the industrial heart of the Netherlands with the pipes of oil refineries and the highest and most modern windmills just a stone's throw away. Both in the past and now, a lot of transport is done by water. They used to be barges, now they are huge container ships.
GRIND AND WHISPER
On the edge of the oversized city lies the historic core with the De Leeuw van Putten pumping station, which, despite its monumental appearance, still ensures that the water level in the polders is regulated. Get on a whisper boat here and less than ten minutes later you have sailed away from the hectic pace of the city. Experience the beauty and tranquility of the nature reserve with ditches and creeks and animal-friendly banks.
FOR ZERO EURO ACROSS
Robin Stam designed the Eurobridges based on the back of the ten and fifty euro banknotes. The De Vier Werelden complex can also be seen near these bridges. The building consists of four parts, which refer to the neighborhood structure of Spijkenisse. The modern building is located along the Oude Maas.
FROM SHIPPING TO WATER SPORTS
The Bernisse, the natural separation between Voorne and Putten, was an important shipping route in the Middle Ages. The ancient creek is now part of a recreational area with modern water sports facilities.
