The Maasstadjes route leads you through the special Maasplassen area with beautiful natural beauty and picturesque villages. Numerous monuments in the white towns of Thorn, Stevensweert and Wessem, among others, remind us of the rich history of this area.
The white town of Thorn
The white town of Thorn has a historic center with white houses and many authentic buildings from the 15th to the 19th century, winding streets with original Maas cobblestones, intimate courtyards, floor mosaics and medieval impressions. For more than 800 years, Thorn was the capital of a miniature principality, now it is a protected cityscape. Stevensweert is an old fortified town on an island between two arms of the Maas. The fortress was founded by the Spanish in 1633. The special street pattern and the centuries-old monuments are especially worth seeing.

Get to know the turbulent and impressive past of Stevensweert and Ohé en Laak in the Regional Museum. The De Hompesche Molen Visitor Center is located in Ohé en Laak. This highest mill in Limburg is located in a unique and historic location: the Island in the Maas, and also houses a brasserie. You can also visit Steenberg Beach Club, De Spaenjerd or Herberg Stadt Stevenswaert along the way. The Maas and Inland Shipping Museum is located in Maasbracht. There are countless objects here that are reminiscent of the past and present of the Meuse and inland shipping.
Cross the border
During this cross-border cycling tour you take a short trip to Belgium. To get back to the Netherlands you cross with a bicycle ferry. The sailing times of this ferry may vary in the different seasons. So check in advance whether the ferry is running when you want to explore this route.
