Tour of the Achterhoek across the border at Winterswijk

You cycle on car-free roads through a small-scale landscape of winding streams, forests, fields and hedgerows. It sometimes seems as if time has stood still here. Further on you pass through the Burlo-Vardingholter Venn und Entenschlatt nature reserve. In this nature reserve you will find growing raised bogs, peat ponds, moist heathlands, birch forests and oak-birch forests. This cross-border nature reserve merges into the Dutch Wooldse Veen. A beautiful route along the heathlands on the German border leads you to Zwilbroekerveen or Zwillbrockervenn with flamingos, just across the German border. Flamingos settle in this nature reserve every year. It is the northernmost breeding area of these special birds.
