Tour of the Achterhoek across the border near Winterswijk

Your route starts at restaurant De Voortwisch. You cycle on car-free roads through a small-scale landscape of winding streams, woods, fields and hedgerows. It sometimes seems as if time has stood still here. On the German border near Burlo you pass the Burlo-Vardingholter Venn und Entenschlatt nature reserve. Here you will find growing raised bog, peat lakes, damp heathlands, birch swamp forests and oak-birch forests. It continues into the Dutch Wooldse Veen. A beautiful route along the heathlands on the German border leads you to the Zwilbroekerveen or Zwillbrockervenn with flamingos, just over the German border. Flamingos descend on this nature reserve every year. It is the northernmost breeding ground of these special birds. Around the hamlets of Winterseijk-Kotten and Ratum you can fully enjoy the typical Achterhoek coulisse landscape.
