Tour of Elsenerveld and the forests of Markelo

From here you cycle along the Elsenerveld and -veen. You will find gentian, sundew and cotton grass there. Many birds live in the area where peace prevails: pheasants, tree creepers, various types of tits and woodpeckers for example. The stone tower mill Vreest Niet (body/remains) was originally a wind-powered corn and hulling mill from 1841. Around the turn of the twentieth century, the hood and the running gear of the mill went up in flames. Since then, the Vreest Niet has served as a storage place for flour. Markelo is a popular place where old monuments, such as farms, manors with outbuildings and historical burial grounds, have been well preserved. Below Holten you cycle through the picturesque surroundings of the Beuseberg, a 34-metre-high hill.
