Around Elsenerveld and the woods of Markelo

Your route starts at Camping & Restaurant De Poppe. From here you cycle along the Elsenerveld and -veen. You will find bell gentian, sundew and wool grass. Many birds live in the area where peace prevails: pheasants, nuthatches, various species of tits and woodpeckers, for example. The stone tower mill Vreest Niet (hull/remainder) was originally a windmill and hulling mill from 1841. Around the turn of the twentieth century, the hood and the aisle of the mill went up in flames. Since then, the Vreest Niet has served as a storage place for flour. Markelo is a popular place where old monuments, such as farms, manors with outbuildings and historic cemeteries, have been well preserved. Below Holten you drive through the picturesque surroundings of the Beuseberg, a 34 meter high hill.
