Description

De Haardennen is a small nature reserve that is managed by the Overijssel Landscape. As part of the Reestdal, the area consists of old drift hills, where Scots pine, but also oak, birch and rowan do well. Sometimes you see holly growing, which makes the (predominantly) deciduous forest even more varied. Here and there in the Haardennen you will find small heathlands, which were created because the trees in these places were felled. To the south of the forest, the Dedemsvaart was filled in in the 1960s with the help of a sand quarry. This is how a small fish pond was created. The bike tour takes you to De Kalkovens Regional Museum. The Avereest Historical Society was founded in 1984, but was only given the designation 'regional museum' many years later. Located in the teaching house in Dedemsvaart, a room where burnt shells used to be quenched, the lime kilns are very close by. The antiquities room has a beautiful collection that offers a nice glimpse into the past: from tools to exhibitions of photos.
