This is the Winterswijk National Landscape, an area of almost 22,000 hectares in total. The semi-open landscape is adorned with small plots and large ash trees. You cycle through woods, lanes and hedgerows and along meandering streams in narrow valleys. Beautiful, old farms and small hamlets are spread across the country. Typical of this region are the so-called scholte farms: the former residences of the influential scholte farmers.'t Walien is a former manor house near Winterswijk. The name Waly or Walyen first appears in documents from 1340. You can still see a part of the west wall with eight family crests, part of the moat and a few outbuildings.
