Tour along the border near Winterswijk

This tour takes you through the Achterhoek scenic landscape around Winterswijk, a region that has been designated a Valuable Cultural Landscape. The semi-open landscape is decorated with small plots and large ash trees. You cycle through groves, avenues and hedgerows and along meandering streams in narrow valleys. Beautiful old farms and small hamlets are spread across the country. Typical for this region are the so-called Scholte farms: the former residences of the influential Scholte farmers. Your ride starts at the Hilgelo recreation area. The area is part of the Winterswijk National Landscape, an area totaling almost 22,000 hectares. It is used for many outdoor and water sports. At Meddo you cycle past the Sellink Mill (hull/remains). This stone belt mill was built in 1873, but burned down in 1933. Only the stone hull is still visible, and it is now used as a storage space.'t Walien is a former manor near Winterswijk. The name Waly or Walyen first appears in documents from 1340. In the early 19th century it consisted of a rectangular, white-plastered country house, canals, gardens, orchards and a number of farmyards. After a renovation in 1905, Huize Walien was known as a stately, white-plastered mansion, with a wide sidewalk and a large landing at the front. The front of the house was decorated with a tower clock with a bell dome. The house burned down completely in a fire in 1908. All that remains is a piece of the west wall with eight family crests, part of the moat and some outbuildings.
