Pay tribute to the Tour of Flanders and get on your bike to explore the surroundings of Oudenaarde and Asper. On this route you will be introduced to the Scheldt Valley and the green ridges of the Flemish Ardennes. You will also find many cut-off Scheldt meanders here that were created when the Scheldt was straightened.
Cycle along the Scheldt
The starting point of this route is in Oudenaarde on the left bank of the Scheldt. This city is known as an art city with the town hall with the cloth hall, the De Lailing house with Oudenaarde tapestries, the church of Pamele, the Beguinage and the Liedst Castle. In short, there is more than enough to see here. From here you set sail along the Scheldt and through a number of villages such as Zingem. Special plants and flowers grow along the old meanders of the Scheldt and it is also the habitat of all kinds of animals.
World Heritage in Oudenaarde
You cycle back to Oudenaarde through this beautiful nature reserve. The town hall and the belfry in the center of the city are especially worth seeing, as this building is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Then it is time to discover the vibrant life on the many terraces of Oudenaarde. You really have to taste the Oudenaarde beer.
The carpet industry of Oudenaarde
For a few years now you have also been able to discover the fascinating and rich past of Oudenaarde in the MOU museum. Oudenaarde enjoyed world fame for its tapestries for centuries. In the sixteenth century, more than half of the population worked in the carpet industry. The MOU zooms in on a sixteenth-century tapestry that was once given to Alexander Farnese as a gift. You can magnify the details yourself using twelve rotating prisms.
