Description
De Groote Peel is a special nature reserve that was partly formed by peat extraction. This created ponds, small peat wells and peeling canals with the associated raised bog plants such as peat moss, sundew and lavender heath.
Peatlands and heathlands
Get on your bike in Beringe and cycle into the De Groote Peel National Park via Grashoek, Spiesberg and Neerkant. You mainly cycle through the green peatlands, but you also cycle a bit through the heathlands to visit the Watchtower located here. From this tower you have a beautiful view of the surrounding area. A little further along the route you will pass the Mijl Op Zeven Visitor Center. This outdoor center organizes fun activities such as treasure hunts and you can visit the shop to buy items you may need to discover nature.
De Groote Peel National Park
De Groote Peel National Park is part of the Peel Edge Fault that originated millions of years ago. It is a contiguous nature reserve of 1,500 hectares with a wide variety of landscapes. Here you will find swamps, heaths, ponds and small areas of forest. Most of the peat in this area has been excavated and no longer grows naturally. This wetland area is an attractive habitat for water birds. About a hundred bird species breed here and migratory birds also feel at home here.
