Swalmen is a relatively unknown Limburg village just above Roermond. However, unknown does not mean unloved, because you can cycle wonderfully quietly along the Asseltse Plassen, along the Maas and through the Swalmdal.
Swalmdal
At the old market in Swalmen you can see, among other things, the Sint-Lambertus Church, which originally dates from the fifteenth century. The current building was built in 1895. The village is bisected by the brook the Swalm. In the pristine stream valley you ride through a gently sloping landscape of wetlands, moist grasslands and, as soon as you cycle a little higher, fragrant coniferous forests. You also cycle through the Bosberg, a forest that borders the Swalmdal in the east.
Asselt Lakes
At the Asseltse Plassen you have a beautiful view over the rippling water. Part of Asselt is a protected village view. You will see beautiful nineteenth-century farms and the Sint-Dionysiuskerk, located on a church hill, whose tower dates from 1515. Just before Beesel is the Grauwe Beer, a flour mill on the banks of the Maas that stood in Zaandam from 1614 to 1891.
