Interesting museums for history buffs

History buffs can indulge themselves in the area surrounding the campsite. The cycle route takes you past Museum Stoomgemaal Winschoten, the Klokkengieterijmuseum and Museum Slag bij Heiligerlee. The latter museum commemorates the battles of 23 May 1568.

Ports and characteristic farms
Not a fan of museums? No problem. On the south side of the Oldambtmeer you can visit a harbour district that is part of the Blauwestad. On the north side of the lake there is a harbour with water sports facilities. A short distance from the harbour you will find a Pitch & Putt course and the Oostwold Airport. Throughout Oldambt you can admire characteristic farms. At the end of the route you can visit the Hermans Dijkstra Museum Farm. In the museum farm you will delve into local history and get an idea of the life of a rich gentleman farmer around 1900.

The Bell Foundry Museum is located in the former bell foundry of the Van Bergen brothers. This branch of the company was opened in 1862 and initially mainly cast bells for church towers throughout the Netherlands. In the late 1930s, the company started to focus on manufacturing carillons. In order to put this new product in the spotlight, a bell tower with a carillon was built on the front of the bell foundry in 1942. After the Second World War, the bellmakers focused more on making firefighting equipment, but in 1980 the company went bankrupt. Since 1987, the bell foundry museum has been located in the restored company building and in 2013 the museum was refurbished.
