Description

Open water, reed beds, swamp forests... It is not for nothing that De Weerribben won the title'Most beautiful place in the Netherlands\\\' in 2004. The Weerribben are covered with beautiful plants and a variety of special animal species live in this area. The carnivorous bladderwort often floats in large masses on the fens, lakes and puddles, but crab shear, water lilies and water hemlock also thrive here. In the reed land you will encounter cheerful colors of rough herbs, including fireweed, skullcap, marsh anthorn and bindweed, while grasses, heather, peat mosses, sundew and marsh cartel leaf grow on acidifying reed land.

The nature of Weerribben-Wieden National Park was created under the influence of humans. Dikes were built from the twelfth century so that the influence of the Zuiderzee diminished and the land was prepared for habitation. After the discovery that dried peat was a good fuel, peat was cut into the Wieden for centuries and long, wide draft holes were created. In the Weerribben, peat extraction started later and rules were drawn up for it. Large puddles have therefore not formed in the Weerribben.

Many mammals live in and around the puddles. Deer, foxes and the reintroduced otter scurry through the marshes and across the fields. In addition, various species of butterflies and dragonflies flutter from plant to plant and chase the purple heron, black tern, bittern, reed warbler, reed warbler and oriole in and around the water. At Nature Activities Center De Weerribben, more is told in an accessible way about the flora and fauna in the National Park.

As part of the De Eese estate, the Eeserveld is located north of Steenwijk. A large part of De Eese is privately owned; here is a forest that is 440 hectares in size and 360 hectares of land are used for agriculture. On the estate is an old castle that was probably built at the beginning of the seventeenth century. An old country house and a large barn stand as silent guards at the castle. A smaller part of De Eese, the Eeserveld, is maintained by Staatsbosbeheer. There are mainly many forests here, which hide the burial mounds in this part of De Eese from view. At a moorland, the trees diverge to offer a beautiful view of the moorland. Historic cart tracks from the Middle Ages run through the area, so when you're cycling here keep your eyes peeled for these fun glimpses into the past.
