Cycle from the monumental town of Harlingen to 'De Gateway to the Zuiderzee', as Makkum was called in the Middle Ages. Along the way you will encounter even more history: the Aldfaers Erf Route.
Medieval Makkum First you drive to Makkum, which developed into an important trading center in the Middle Ages thanks to two locks. Mills and shipyards were established here, but the shell lime distilleries were especially important. Masonry lime was largely removed. In the coat of arms of Makkum you see a golden mermaid holding a sailing ship and a lime kiln.
Aldfaers Erf Along the way you can also enjoy the Aldfaers Erf Route. This exciting discovery route takes you through the past two centuries, past various places with authentic buildings. View old farmyards, historic farms and beautiful houses, build authentic rafts or play a game of farmer's golf among the meadows. Also get off at the De Onderneming mill in Witmarsum. The nineteenth-century tower mill has a wooden octagon and is thatched. A beautiful spot in rural Friesland!
