Strolling through Leuven
The starting point of this route is in Rotselaar. From here you head to Holsbeek, Leuven and Heverlee. Take some time to look around Leuven and stroll through centuries-old streets full of history and beautiful buildings. You really should also take a look at the beguinage, part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The castle of Arenberg
Just outside Leuven you cycle through the Arenberg Park with the castle of Arenberg and the mill of Arenberg. In the fourteenth century a castle was built on this spot by the lords of Heverlee. In the sixteenth century a new castle was built in Renaissance style that formed the basis for the castle that you see here now. In the nineteenth century the castle was converted into the current castle. In 1916 the Duke of Arenberg donated the castle and the surrounding buildings to the University of Leuven. Then you cycle via Herent and Rotselaar back to the starting point of the route.
The Abbey of Park
Just outside Leuven you will find the Park Abbey. This Norbertine abbey covers some 42 hectares and is one of the best preserved abbeys in Belgium. The abbey church now serves as the parish church of Vlierbeek. Other buildings of the old abbey have been converted into homes. The nature around the abbey consists of open fields, avenues, ponds and meadows that are perfect for a walk.
