This route takes you from Oudenaarde along the banks of the Scheldt and through beautiful open nature areas. Enjoy the peace and quiet here, clear your head and then sniff a bit of culture in Oudenaarde. The best of both worlds in one route.
Old cut meanders
On the first part of this route you will explore the Scheldt valley and the green ridges of the Flemish Ardennes. Originally, the Scheldt was a meandering river that meanders through the landscape. This changed in the 18th century when the river was straightened. This created numerous cut-off meanders. Beautiful nature reserves full of flora and fauna have emerged on the banks of those meanders. Cycle around here and enjoy all the natural beauty around you. You then cycle through open areas a little further away from the Scheldt and through various small villages.
Oudenaarde town hall
Eventually you will return to the art city of Oudenaarde, where you also started your trip. Here you will be amazed with all the beautiful buildings that you will find here. How about, for example, the town hall and the belfry on the market of Oudenaarde? This beautiful building is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage.
Museum the MOU
If you want to know more about the tapestry industry of Oudenaarde, you really should take a look at the MOU museum. Oudenaarde has been famous for its tapestries for centuries and in the sixteenth century more than half of the population worked in the tapestry industry. In the MOU you can learn more about a tapestry that was once a gift to Alexander Farnese. Through twelve rotating prisms you can view all the details of the carpet.
