Explore the area around the fortified town of Heusden

From forests to a historic fort
From the starting point of the route you can walk straight into the De Loonse en Drunense Duinen National Park, a varied nature reserve of over 3,500 hectares. The living drifting sands in this area are especially special. You won't find them on such a large scale anywhere in Europe. Via Vlijmen you cycle further to the Fort at Hedikhuizen. This fort was built in 1862 as part of the Zuider Waterlinie. With this water line, a large area could be flooded to protect Heusen against an enemy attack. You then arrive in Heusden, the highlight of this route. This town dates back to the Middle Ages and this is reflected in the historic center. So be sure to take some time to poke around in Heusden.

The Roestelberg
Then you cycle further to Drunen, past the Hertogin van Brabant mill. The start and end point of this route is at the De Roestelberg restaurant. Enjoy a delicious pancake or another meal here or book an overnight stay in one of the comfortable boomgalows.

Historical Heusden
Heusden was already walled in the Middle Ages. However, in 1569 the Spaniards managed to capture and destroy the city. After another major fire in 1572, there was not much left of the town. In 1581, William of Orange ordered the modernization of the fortifications. The harbor and castle from the twelfth century were also located within the fortress wall.
