Visit to the Brouwersdam

Goeree-Overflakkee
Experience the dune coast of Goeree-Overflakkee where the senses are pleasantly stimulated by the salty sea and an unspoilt dune landscape. The outer dunes were created around the year 1100 as a new dune arc and at some distance northwest of the inner dunes. Unique to the Netherlands is that the inner dune area has remained virtually untouched since its creation in the early Middle Ages, except for grazing. It consists of mud flats, salt marshes, creeks, beaches, pools, dune valleys, grasslands and forest. The dunes provide habitat for endangered species such as the arctic vole and the narrow snail. To protect the special habitats and unique flora and fauna, the area has been designated as a Natura 2000 area.

Wind through your hair
The Grevelingen used to be an estuary of the North Sea. With the Grevelingendam and the Brouwersdam, the Grevelingen was closed off from the sea and the Grevelingenmeer was a fact. Due to the closure, the sandbank Hompelvoet changed into an uninhabited island with large, open plains and rugged vegetation. Fjord horses and cows graze naturally on the Hompelvoet for sustenance. In the breeding season, the island is off limits and is then guarded by a bird watcher. Striking is the growth of the autumn screw orchid, which only occurs in two other places in the Netherlands. When you have let the wind blow through your hair on the Brouwersdam, you will return to Goeree where Lighthouse Westhoofd will loom in front of you in the Westduinen. The square tower was built of bricks between 1947 and 1950. At 56 metres, the national monument reaches an impressive height. Incidentally, a cast-iron tower was already built in 1862, which was replaced in 1911. That tower was destroyed by the Germans in World War II.
