Cycling along fortresses on the Waal

It is wonderful to travel for miles along the Waal. Cycling along the dike you can enjoy the fresh air and the views over the water and the grasslands. You will soon arrive in Gorinchem, a well-preserved fortified town. Step off for a moment to experience the historic atmosphere. You can cross the Waal (which is called Boven-Merwede here by the way) with a ferry, after which you can take a look at the picturesque Woudrichem. Here you will see, among other things, the centuries-old Prison Gate that was part of the city walls. After crossing the Afgedamde Maas you arrive at yet another historical attraction: Loevestein Castle. You cycle through the polders to Brakel and cross the Waal again. The route ends with a terrace at Uitspanning Mini Camping De Leuve hoeve.
