This cycling route along the West Frisian Omringdijk allows you to fully enjoy the vast West Frisian landscape and the pleasant folklore. The route shows you the beautiful Zijperpolder. It was Jan van Scorel who took the initiative in the 16th century to reclaim Zijpe by surrounding it with a sturdy wide dike. A man with many talents, a respected priest but certainly also known as a painter. The east side of the Zijperpolder is surrounded by the so-called Westfriese Omringdijk; a winding dike of no less than 126 kilometers long. From the height of the dike you have a beautiful panoramic view over the farmlands and bulb fields and you will naturally pass many picturesque places. Such as Schagen, an attractive city with the characteristic church towers of the Catholic Christoforus Church and the Protestant Grote Kerk. Schagen is the beating heart of the'Zijpe\\\'; Around the market square you will find numerous terraces and specialty shops. Every Thursday you will find a busy weekly market where fresh local products are promoted. In the summer months, this famous market is decorated with folk dancing, ring stitching and many typical West Frisian traditions that give you the feeling of going back in time.
