Description
This route takes you through beautiful nature reserves around the Belgian Tessenderlo. You will find wild plants such as white and brown beaked rush, small sundew, round sundew and marsh trefoil. The nightjar and woodlark have adopted these areas as their breeding grounds and the gray shrike is a regularly seen winter visitor.
Brasserie & Cycling Café de Bosrand
At the end of the route you return to the Gerhagen nature reserve at Brasserie & Fietscafé de Bosrand. Plop down on the sun terrace for a nice drink or have a bite to eat in the attractive brasserie. You can choose from an extensive menu with seasonal dishes and an impressive wine list. You definitely won't go home hungry.
Dessel-Kwaadmechelen Canal
The starting point of this route is in the Gerhagen nature reserve. Here you will also find a visitor center where you can get information about the nature in this area. From the village of Olmen you cycle a short distance along the Dessel-Kwaadmechelen canal. The green banks are striking about the canal. The clay pits here slowly filled with rainwater, creating beautiful biotopes with all kinds of aquatic plants and different fish species. The slightly sloping banks and fishing grids are simple measures to keep the larger carp away from the banks. This has led to interesting riparian vegetation.
