The nature around Lelystad

If you cycle through Flevoland, you choose to pedal slowly over new land. Flevoland has only been mined and cultivated since the middle of the last century. Take a moment to think about the battle against seawater: now you are cycling over the former seabed.

Windmills
While you cycle through the world-famous polder, you can get a breath of fresh air. Wind has been used as an energy source in the Netherlands for centuries. It is therefore not surprising that the windmill is an icon of the Dutch landscape. Corn and grain were peeled by windmills, entire areas of land were reclaimed with windmills. But the Netherlands has been modernized and nowadays we generate energy with the modern wind turbine that you encounter along the route.

Oostvaardersplassen
You drive along the edge of the Hollandse Hout, a relatively young and varied forest west of Lelystad. Poplars, willows, alders, oaks and beeches grow there. From the dike you have beautiful views of the Oostvaardersplassen, the famous new wilderness. With a bit of luck you will see the white-tailed eagle fly over.
