Until the beginning of the twentieth century, the nature around Overloon was wild and unspoiled. The Overloonse Duinen is an area with drifting dunes, many juniper thickets and a piece of heathland. Trees were planted on the sandy soil for timber production and over time the rugged nature was exploited.
The route runs through and past centuries-old places such as Sint Anthonis, a characteristic village and Boxmeer, which was already inhabited by the Romans. In his book De Bello Gallico, Julius Caesar expressed his annoyance at the intertwined hawthorn hedges that separated the agricultural plots. This description is the oldest of the area.
There are listening stones of the Liberation Route at 75 locations that revive history by marking the journey of the liberators in the Second World War. On the Overloonseweg is field boulder L119: Hattert Castle.
