Description

This cycling route starts at Café de Gevangenpoort/Restaurant La Galera in historic Edam. You soon drive to Volendam, a village that enjoys great national fame. You undoubtedly know it from the well-known Dutch people who come from the village: singer Jan Smit, the 3J\\\'s and the duo Nick and Simon. In Volendam there is the beautiful Kathammermolen, an octagonal inner mill. The wind-powered polder mill was probably built in 1650. The mill was restored in 1986, the year is also stated on the mill. Via Monnickendam and Purmerend you arrive at Fort Benoorden Purmerend. The fort and associated buildings were built between 1886 and 1912. It served as a prison: in 1945, suspects and convicts of collaboration with the German occupiers were held here.
